Their mother died while giving birth. Therefore the children are brought to a pouponnière where they are cared for. Usually children return home when they turn 10-12 months, however the family had no means to take care of the twins so they will stay longer at the pouponnière. At the end of 2007 Khalifa and Aida returned to their birth village.
